Geometric Balance. Discreet Restoration.

Otoplasty at Freyea is a combined exercise in artistry and cartilage engineering. We address prominent or 'pinned' ears not by simply pulling them back, but by meticulously reshaping the underlying cartilage. By recreating the natural folds of the ear and selectively removing or weakening specific structural elements, we create a result that looks soft, integrated, and entirely natural—often providing a significant boost in confidence for both adults and children.

What Otoplasty Can Address

Prominent or 'bat' ears that protrude significantly

Large ears (macrotia) in proportion to the head

Asymmetry where one ear differs from the other

Abnormal shapes caused by injury or birth

Stretched or torn earlobes from heavy earrings

Desire for permanent correction of ear projection

Artistry in Cartilage

Ear surgery is unique because the results are almost purely geometric. Our philosophy is to avoid the 'pinned' look—where the ears are pulled too flat against the head. instead, we focus on restoring a healthy angle and creating the subtle, soft curves of the antihelix that define a naturally proportioned ear.

Is Otoplasty Right for You?

Otoplasty is suitable for both children (typically aged 5 and above when cartilage is stable) and adults. We assess the thickness of your cartilage and the degree of protrusion to design a procedure that offers both stability and a naturally integrated look.

  • You feel self-conscious about the prominence of your ears
  • Your ears are asymmetrical or noticeably different in shape
  • Children whose ears have finished most of their growth (usually age 5+)
  • You have realistic expectations about the surgical correction
  • You are in good general health and do not smoke
The Freyea Signature
Soft-Structure Anatomical Pinning.

The Freyea Signature

We utilise advanced cartilage-sparing techniques that rely on internal permanent sutures and gentle scoring rather than extensive removal. This signature approach ensures the ears have a 'memory' of their new, refined position without the stiffness or artificial look often associated with standard otoplasty methods.

The Design of Proportions

Every ear is an individual blueprint. We plan our incisions to be completely hidden in the natural crease where the ear meets the head, ensuring that the evidence of surgery remains invisible.

01

Topographic Analysis

Measuring the specific angles of protrusion and the anatomical absence of the antihelical folds.

02

Cartilage Remodelling

Gently weakening and reshaping the cartilage to allow for a permanent transition to the new position.

03

Internal Anchoring

Using specialized permanent sutures to secure the ear in its refined, anatomical position.

04

Discreet Closure

Meticulous internal suturing followed by a compressive dressing to support the new structure during healing.

Antihelical Fold Creation

Many prominent ears lack the 'antihelical fold'—the natural curviness inside the rim. Our technique focuses primarily on recreating this fold, which naturally brings the ear closer to the head without the need for aggressive pulling.

Conchal Bowl Reduction

In cases where the 'bowl' of the ear is excessively deep, we selectively remove or reposition a small piece of cartilage to bring the entire ear unit into better facial alignment.

Procedure Details

Timelines may vary depending on whether one or both ears are being treated and the complexity of the internal reshaping required.

Anaesthesia

Local with Sedation (Adults) or General Anaesthesia (Children)

Duration

1.5 to 2.5 Hours

Recovery

Return to school/work in 5–7 days; protective headband for 4 weeks

Results

Permanent repositioning; results are immediate once dressings are removed

Refinement Timeline

First 72 Hours

A specialized head wrap is worn to protect the ears and minimize swelling. Moderate tenderness is common.

Week 1

The primary bandage is removed, revealing the new position. A lighter headband is worn mainly at night thereafter.

Month 1

Swelling has largely subsided. Most activities can be resumed, though care should be taken to avoid trauma to the ears.

3 Months

The cartilage has fully set in its new position and the incision scars are maturing into fine, well-hidden marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the result permanent?
Yes. Once the cartilage has healed and set into its new position, the result is permanent. The internal sutures provide lasting support.
Will I have visible scars?
No. The incisions are placed in the posterior auricular crease—the natural fold behind the ear—making them nearly impossible to see once healed.
What is the best age for children?
Most surgeons recommend waiting until age 5 or 6, when the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed but still pliable enough for easy reshaping.
Does it affect my hearing?
No. Otoplasty is an external aesthetic procedure. It does not involve the ear canal or any part of the auditory system.
Is the recovery painful?
Most patients describe it as reaching a peak of 'throbbing' for the first 24-48 hours, which is well-managed with standard medication.
How long do I need to wear a headband?
Typically, a headband is worn 24/7 for the first week, and then only at night for the following 3–4 weeks to prevent the ears from folding during sleep.
Can I have only one ear corrected?
Yes. If only one ear is prominent (unilateral otoplasty), we can focus solely on matching it to the other to restore symmetry.
When can I wash my hair?
You can usually wash your hair carefully about 3 days after the procedure, once the primary bulky dressing has been removed.
Will the ears ever 'pop back'?
While rare, if the ears are traumatized during early healing, the sutures could shift. This is why wearing the protective headband at night is critical.
